What happens when something doesn't go as planned?
As a maternity photographer in NJ, I often arrive at locations just as the sun is setting.
I was heading to a maternity shoot at a local park, but when I arrived, the gate was already closed even though I arrived before closing. Missing the golden hour light wasn’t an option, so I had to come up with a backup plan. I ended up finding a beautiful spot right outside the park and the photos turned out stunning. Sometimes the best-laid plans don’t quite work out, but that’s okay. Being able to improvise is an essential part of being a photographer.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, here are some tips on how to capture images nearby.
- First, don’t panic. There are plenty of other ways to capture beautiful maternity photos.
- Second, take a look around and see if there’s another spot with a similar vibe. If not, try to find a spot with pretty lighting and a nice background.
- Third, don’t be afraid to get creative! Use items that are available to you to create unique compositions. Try moving closer to your subject and using a wider aperture to blur out the background. You can also get creative with lighting by using off-camera flash or reflectors.
- And finally, don’t forget that maternity shoots are all about the connection between mother and child, so make sure to capture plenty of close-ups. With a little bit of planning, you can still get stunning maternity photos that will be treasured forever even if your original plan doesn’t work out.
