Branding headshot for NJ small business owner in Wall NJ

There are lots to consider when getting your headshots or personal branding photos done.

Planning is key. These photos will showcase your brand and your business.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for your session.

Before Your Session

Two days before your session.

Make sure all your garments are clean and pressed, then put them in a hanging garment bag. Put your shoes in a box or another bag so they don’t get your clothes dirty. Also, keep jewelry separated so they don’t get tangled up in each other.  check the items off only after they are packed and ready to go for the following day.

Before the session.

Make sure to get a good night’s sleep. I know you may feel nervous. Trust me, I know how it feels… But I want you to relax and just enjoy this amazing process!

What to Wear Tips

CHOOSE A COLOR PALLET

Stick to a cohesive color palette that complements your skin tone and aligns with your brand colors. Consider bringing a range of colors. Something neutral (white, beige, ivory), something with a pop of color (red, pink, etc), something dark (purple, blue, black). Creating a strong personal presence through photos involves choosing outfits that reflect your personality and style.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for your headshot session:

Dress in clothing that not only brings you comfort but also resonates with your style. Avoid the last-minute rush of buying a new outfit the night before your session. Instead, try out your outfit choices beforehand, take some snapshots with your phone, and see how they make you feel. Bring a variety of options.

Consider bringing at least 3 – 4 outfits, both casual and formal styles. While we may not use every option, having choices ensures that you’ll feel confident and at ease during the session.

CASUAL LOOKS

Chances are, especially if you’re an entrepreneur, your everyday work attire doesn’t consist of a blazer and trousers. You might find yourself in comfy yoga pants paired with a cozy sweater or perhaps rocking comfortable jeans and a stylish blouse. Consider what you genuinely wear in your day-to-day routine. The beauty lies in the versatility – you can effortlessly dress it up or down to create a range of looks!

MORE FORMAL LOOKS

If your business attire leans towards the formal side, definitely include those options! Bring outfits that align with your business. If client meetings often involve a blazer, that’s perfect – bring it along. If you’re accustomed to dashing between events in a stylish dress, seize the opportunity to showcase your favorite one! Embrace the essence of this photoshoot and showcase your preferred look.

I suggest opting for a well-fitted blazer that avoids appearing too large or causing bunching in the photographs.

Make sure to bring coordinated bottoms, some shots may be 3/4 or full body.

Ensure your nails are clean and well-manicured, as your hands will be in headshots. Choose neutral colors, a simple buff, or a classic French manicure to maintain a polished and timeless look.

DRESS FOR YOUR BODY TYPE

Wear outfits that flatter your body shape and make you feel confident. Consider the neckline, sleeve length, and silhouette that enhance your best features.

Try to avoid loose or boxy tops, as they tend to create a larger appearance on camera. Opt for longer sleeves, such as 3/4 length or full-length, as they are universally flattering and have a slimming effect. Sleeveless options work well with toned arms or when paired with layers.

Think textures. Textures, like lace or ruffles add visual interest without overwhelming.

CHOOSING A TOP

Selecting the right top is crucial. Let’s begin with the most common piece of clothing: tops. When a top, the neckline becomes a key factor.

There are lots of neckline options: scoop, v-neck, cowl, high neck, square, halter, and many more. It’s advisable to choose a neckline style that complements your body shape. Avoid turtlenecks or mock neck tops, although the choice ultimately depends on the aesthetic you’re aiming to achieve.

Individuals with a fuller bust might find scoop necks flattering as they accentuate the figure while providing ample coverage.

When it comes to tops ideal for headshots, consider structured button-up shirts featuring collars, form-fitting crewneck or scoop-neck long-sleeve tops, lightweight knit sweaters boasting v-necklines, and crewnecks.

AVOID DISTRACTING PATTERNS

Go for solid colors or subtle patterns that won’t distract from your face. Avoid clothing with logos or overly busy patterns.

ACCESSORIES

Choose accessories that complement your outfit and add a touch of personality.  Keep it simple; avoid excessive jewelry or accessories.

Feel free to mix it up: Hats can add a touch of creativity or artistic flair to your headshots, especially when they complement your unique personal style.

THINK COMFORT

Ensure you feel comfortable in your chosen outfits. Avoid clothing that is too tight or restrictive.

EXPRESS YOURSELF

Ultimately, let your personality shine through in your clothing choices. Your outfit should be an authentic representation of who you are.

Remember, the key is to strike a balance between showcasing your unique style and maintaining a polished and professional appearance. Take the time to plan and experiment with different looks to find what works best for your brand.
